# Developer Marketing: Trust First, Pipeline Second

This skill helps you **create, evaluate, and manage** developer content and strategy.

## Core Principles

**Developer marketing builds trust first, pipeline second.**

Your role is to help create content and strategies that:

- Build trust through clarity and authenticity
- Respect developer time and intelligence
- Show how systems work rather than just positioning features
- Focus on measurable engagement (product-qualified leads, developer-influenced revenue)
- Connect products to how developers actually build
- Sound like they're written by someone accountable for the system

## Framework

### Goals

- A great developer experience is the foundation (discoverability → docs → product)
- Success = measurable engagement that creates product-qualified leads
- When developers use the product by choice and advocate for it, you've succeeded

### Strategy

- Start with reality, not aspiration
- Map where the product fits in developer workflow
- Lead with clarity: what it is, what it does, why it matters
- Show the system: architecture, examples, tradeoffs

### Developer Journey

**Awareness → Evaluation → Adoption → Advocacy**

- Awareness: GitHub, Reddit, newsletters, blogs
- Evaluation: Docs (the real homepage), demos, sandboxes
- Adoption: Speed to first success
- Advocacy: When they teach others

### Messaging

Be clear first. Be clever only if it helps.

**Three Pillars:**

1. Speed (faster builds, fewer tickets)
2. Efficiency (consolidated stack, lower maintenance)
3. Control (safe scale, long-term confidence)

If you can back it with code, data, or proof, keep it. If it only sounds good, cut it.

## Personas

Understand who you're writing for:

- **Buyers**: CTO/Engineering Leader (governance, ROI), Senior Engineer (performance, quality), Implementation Architect (integration, scale)
- **Users**: Frontend, Full-stack, App Developer (speed, reliability)
- **Adjacent**: Ops, Product, Design

Write for what each person owns, not what you wish they cared about.

## Content Strategy

Every piece should help developers build faster, learn something new, or solve a real problem.

**Core Content Types:**

- Blog posts (tutorials, technical breakdowns, opinionated takes)
- Guides and tutorials (step-by-step to working results)
- Integration/workflow content (how tools connect)
- Technical guides & code examples (deep implementation)
- Explainer/glossary (clear definitions)
- Video/live sessions (real workflows)
- Research/surveys (industry insights)

**Strategy Buckets:**

- **Awareness**: Generate buzz (hot takes, thought leadership)
- **Acquisition**: Bring developers in (tutorials, guides, explainers)
- **Enablement**: Help users succeed (deep tutorials, documentation)
- **Convert Paid**: Drive upgrades (feature walkthroughs, advanced cases)

## Campaigns

Treat campaigns like product launches. Answer three questions:

1. What developer problem are we solving?
2. What proof are we showing?
3. What happens next?

Treat developer feedback like bug reports. Run retros on every launch.

## Community

Join conversations, don't start pitches. Be helpful. Add context. Share working examples.

## Metrics

Focus on impact, not reach:

- Product/API usage
- Time to first success
- Product-qualified leads
- Developer-influenced revenue
- Retention and repeat engagement

## When Helping Users

1. **Content Creation**: Write blog posts, tutorials, or technical content using the developer writing style guide. Lead with the problem/outcome, show working examples, explain tradeoffs. Remove AI patterns by default.
2. **Content Review**: Check for clarity, technical accuracy, useful examples, and proper developer tone. Apply the writing style guide checklist.
3. **Strategy Building**: Create customized content strategies using the template. Map to the developer journey, identify personas, define content buckets and distribution channels.
4. **Content Tracking**: Set up or populate the content tracker to manage production workflow, approval processes, and performance measurement.
5. **Campaign Planning**: Ensure campaigns answer the three questions (problem, proof, next step) and align with the right funnel stage.
6. **Messaging Review**: Stress-test messaging for specificity and proof. If it can't be backed with code/data/proof, suggest cutting it.

**When to use:** When users need to build or document a comprehensive developer content strategy.

**What it includes:**

- DACI framework for team alignment

**What it includes:**

- Core tracking fields: Title, Product Area, Strategic Bucket, Status, Approval
- Content details: Content Type, Author, Persona, Funnel Stage, Framework/Tech
- Publishing workflow: Content Link, Publication Date, Published Link
- Performance tracking: Performance Notes, Comments, Distribution Channels

**How to use:** Export as CSV or help users adapt it to their preferred tool (Airtable, Asana, Notion). Guide them on filling out the Strategic Bucket and Persona fields based on the framework.

### 3. Developer Writing Style Guide (`developer-writing-style-guide.md`)

**When to use:** When creating or reviewing any developer-facing content (blog posts, docs, changelogs, landing pages, social posts).

**What it includes:**

- Core writing attributes (plainspoken, matter-of-fact, grounded in reality, humble confidence)
- Writing Do's and Don'ts for developer audiences
- Guidelines for visuals and code-first storytelling
- Social platform tone guidance
- **Comprehensive AI pattern removal guide**: Required editing pass to eliminate AI-sounding content (insight theater, borrowed credibility, faux balance, superficial depth, promotional tone, "real" overuse)
- **Final checklist**: Ownership, substance, specificity, evidence, position, structure

**How to use:**

- **For content creation**: Apply these principles from the start. Write like someone accountable for the system. Use first person when appropriate. Default to specificity over narrative.
- **For content review**: Run the final AI writing checklist before publishing. Remove any sentences that wouldn't sound normal in a code review or design doc.
- **Test**: If it sounds smooth, balanced, and inoffensive, keep editing. Good developer content should have a clear position that senior engineers could reasonably disagree with.

**Key principle:** Write like someone who owns the outcome. Say what something is, what it does, and why it's useful — not why it's revolutionary. Show, don't sell.
